The scientific publication Studia Historica Slovenica, with the subtitle Journal for Humanistic and Social Studies, published by the Dr Franc Kovačič Historical Society in Maribor, was first published in 2001.
Its founders had the goal of publishing a journal with an editorial vision different from that of other historical journals in Slovenia. According to its founding act, Studia Historica Slovenica (SHS) is an interdisciplinary scientific journal that covers the fields of History, Ethnology, Art History, Archaeology, Geography and Linguistics, while it also publishes reviews and reports on publications and developments across the disciplines it covers.

In the spirit of the present times, the publisher envisioned the journal under the tagline ‘A world without borders’, as a work that would primarily refer to Maribor and its region Styria, but in its later issues expand into a nationwide, European, i.e., international journal. The highest professional level of the journal is evidenced by the editorial board, which includes, in addition to the most eminent experts from renowned Slovenian institutions (the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts in Maribor, the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, the Institute of Contemporary History in Ljubljana, the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Science and Research Centre in Koper), experts from Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and the USA.
SHS was published in two volumes across its first two years, while from the third year of publication onwards, three volumes a year were published. Two issues are always published in Slovenian, organised thematically, while the third issue instead possesses a broader focus, with its disquisitions written in three languages – Slovenian, English and German – to promote Slovenian scientific studies beyond Slovenian borders. The journal publishes disquisitions by leading European and American researchers on topics related to our territory and its history.
Despite the journal’s high scientific quality, there is nevertheless a great deal of interest in it, both amongst professionals and lay enthusiasts of our past. Its articles are highly readable and, in addition to the quality of the content itself, a great deal of attention is also paid to the overall appearance of the journal and to the inclusion of numerous images.
Studia Historica Slovenica dedicates most of its space to scientific publications that refer to the most neglected local and regional history of Slovenia, the history of Maribor, and its most prominent personalities in the field of humanities and social sciences.

In the years to come, SHS will maintain its current editorial policy, which has built up a good reputation both in Slovenia and abroad over its 7 years of regular publication.
